Help us Hack the Digital Atlanta Lounge

The Digital Atlanta Lounge is a space where you can chill out between sessions, co-work (and check back in on your 'day job'), and take a break from all of the excitement of listening, learning and networking. Of course the lounge has fast free wireless internet. But it will also showcase sensors and new technologies which bring the internet into the environment (we call this "ubiquitous computing"). And you can help! Join a team of expert hardware hackers/technologists/designers as we hack up prototypes that will digitally augment the lounge area for the duration of Digital Atlanta. Facilitators will help you to create working prototypes based on sensors, cameras, LEDs, projectors and small screens.
Join a team to:

  • create a co-working desk that makes it easy to see who's hard and work and who's up for a chat
  • measure and display the busyness of the lounge via door-based sensors as well as wifi-measurements
  • create a projection of real-time tweets, upcoming events, weather, and traffic reports
  • some other top-secret ideas, too!

You don't need experience (though that's good too -- we'll be using Processing, Wiring, and Arduino). All you need is the desire to make something cool. Remember, "the best way to predict the future is to invent it."

When Social Media & Entertainment Collide: Why your TV has a better social life than you do

Your TV's social life has never been better! According to a recent Google study, 77% of TV viewers multi-task on a second screen during TV viewing, spending 42% of second screen time on social networks! Entertainment consumption is now happening across multiple devices with users spending an average of 4.4 hours a day in front of video screens. This convergence of video across multiple devices combined with social media offers compelling opportunities for digital marketers

In this session, we'll explore how digital marketers are using social media to engage fans and build social buzz for entertainment content--before, during and after the show. We'll discuss how fan participation is now becoming part of the show, and how interactive social networks like Twitter and entertainment social applications like Get Glue are generating audience buzz and viewer loyalty.

Designing for Engagement

Many companies can trick and persuade users to sign-up for their product — which is usually true for every product with a free trial; however, most people will only use the product a few times and forget about it. *Customers* are the result of a series of events. Building systems with interactions that is capable of sustaining a user’s attention both to other users and the locality of its use, requires the consideration of a strong UX strategy.

This presentation will give a few insights and tactics on ways to help increase your user engagement and create brand ambassadors.

No One Cares About Your Content--Yet.

While content as 'king' may not be the best analogy, the importance of well-written, useful text content can't be overstated. Tone can affect engagement, keywords can make or break your SEO, length can kill interest—great writing is vital. Content isn't just blog posts or 'About' pages, it's everything that gives information (including the way the information itself is presented)! I'm seeing a common theme amongst non-profits: no one cares about their content.

In this session, we'll refresh how we view our own web content by seeing it through the eyes of the user, and we'll discuss methods of improving UX (user experience) by employing simple and effective psychology alongside common-sense SEO. Then, since better prospects will be finding and reading your content, I'll show you how to target your audience, measure the results, and constantly improve your outreach.

Relevancy and Context: The Key to Great Mobile Experiences

While we've been using the term "personal computing" for well over 40 years, the device in your pocket is really the first computer-worthy of the moniker. Consider that the typical smartphone possesses the senses of vision, audition, mechanoreception, equilibrioception, and thermoception; and they’re all backed by information regarding the user's location, friends, schedule, correspondence, etc. Now, top it off with a full-time connection to the Internet. If we define context as the sum total of everything that the user is experiencing at the moment of engagement, then the mobile device has the unique ability to gather contextual information and provide relevant content in ways never before imagined.

The U.S. Marine Corps: Building a national brand strategy to support the local level

Every organization and corporation is now aware that a social media presence is a must. Of the myriad problems that come from entering into a dialogue with consumers and customers, one of the most complex is how to orchestrate the social media strategy and management internally. Each internal team from PR to advertising has an agenda for social media, and the conflicts become more pronounced when a corporation has member institutions (such as a franchisee model). The U.S. Marine Corps faced similar problems when rolling out its social media program – not only did the program have to address the needs of a national brand strategy, but also had to work on a local level to support the recruiter. Learn from the agency leaders who created the strategy behind the program as well as the recruiters who use it on the local level.
